國民黨昨天正式提名洪秀柱參選2016年總統選舉，美聯社報導提到，台灣自1980年代民主化以來，從未有過女性當總統，也不曾有過主要政黨都提名女性擔任總統參選人的情況，這釋放出台灣選民已準備好接受由女性領導國家的訊號。
報導還介紹亞洲其他國家女性從政的情況，並提到相較於台灣的立法委員有1/3是女性，日本和南韓則各為13%與16%。
「華盛頓郵報」及「紐約時報」都引述美聯社這篇發自台北的報導，文章也提到兩岸議題在這場選舉扮演的角色，而兩位參選人對與中國大陸關係的看法不同，揭開選戰序幕。
報導指出，洪秀柱的兩岸政策與總統馬英九提出的問題「一中各表」相似，在這一基礎下兩岸擱置爭議、展開協商對話，簽署經濟協議；而蔡英文所屬的民進黨則拒絕兩岸間的對話以此為基礎，認為這輕忽台灣的自主權。
